Australian children will be banned from using social media.

On November 27, the House of Representatives in Australia passed a bill that prohibits citizens under the age of 16 from using social media. The Senate is expected to approve it later this week. Platforms will have exactly one year to figure out how to implement age restrictions; otherwise, they could face multimillion-dollar fines.

Australia is planning to trial an age verification system that may involve biometric data or government identification to ensure compliance with age restrictions on social media. This is one of the strictest control measures ever implemented globally.

Major tech companies, such as Meta* and Google, have urged the government of this country to postpone the adoption of the new bill until the age verification technology trial is completed.
