The Duma has passed a law regarding voluntary return to service.

The Verkhovna Rada has approved the draft law on voluntary return to service for those who initially deserted their military unit or went AWOL.

Рада утвердила закон о добровольном возвращении на военную службу.

This was reported by people's deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

According to his information, 253 parliamentarians supported the decision.

Specifically, the bill proposes:

  • to allow military personnel who have deserted or left their units for the first time to voluntarily return to service (in this case, their contract continues to be valid);

  • to restore monetary payments and the provision of food, clothing, and other support, as well as benefits and social guarantees upon their return to service;

  • if soldiers return to service after their first desertion or unauthorized absence, any criminal proceedings initiated against them should not be grounds for denying their re-enlistment.

Previously, we wrote that in October of this year, courts in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Volyn, Transcarpathian, and Ternopil regions issued about one hundred rulings allowing military personnel who had deserted to return to service.

We also reported that in November, the Ivano-Frankivsk City Court permitted a soldier who had left his unit to return to the front without punishment.
