The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied the information released in the media regarding Ukraine's ability to develop its own nuclear bomb should the United States reduce military aid.
This was
reported by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Georgiy Tikhiy.
“Ukraine adheres to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons; we do not possess, develop, or intend to acquire nuclear weapons. Ukraine closely collaborates with the IAEA and is fully transparent for its monitoring, which excludes the use of nuclear materials for military purposes,” the statement reads.
Earlier, the publication
Times, citing an alleged memo prepared for the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, reported that Ukraine could quickly create a basic plutonium device using technology similar to the "Fat Man" bomb dropped by the Americans on Nagasaki in 1945.
The Times also stated that Kyiv, lacking the time to build and launch large uranium enrichment facilities, would have to utilize plutonium extracted from spent fuel rods previously used in nuclear reactors at power plants.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned that during his conversation with the then-elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, he discussed the necessity for Ukraine to join NATO, also referencing Kyiv's renunciation of nuclear weapons.
The German publication Bild, citing an unnamed Ukrainian official, reported that Ukraine has the materials and knowledge to create nuclear weapons: “We have the material, we have the knowledge. If given the order, we would need just a few weeks to create the first bomb.”
Subsequently, Zelensky himself denied that Ukraine is preparing to create nuclear weapons.
It is worth noting that during a meeting with Donald Trump (then a Republican presidential candidate), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
stated that Ukraine could be protected either by nuclear weapons or NATO.
Zelensky later
clarified that Ukraine does not plan to restore its nuclear arsenal, and the corresponding rumors are unfounded.
