The ship, launched on May 27, 1967, became the last aircraft carrier of the United States powered by steam turbine propulsion. It was decommissioned in 2007, after 39 years of service.
The vessel participated in the first Gulf War in 1991 and during the early stages of the War in Afghanistan.
On January 17, 2025, the USS John F. Kennedy set sail on its final journey from the U.S. Navy's ship maintenance station to the International Shipbreaking Limited yard in Brownsville, Texas. There, it will be dismantled, and the parts will be sold as scrap metal.
