Research group leader Richard Mih stated that he was surprised by the results. He believed that the level of drug use among teenagers would at least partially recover after a significant decline at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, but this did not happen. The reduction in drug use not only persisted but also intensified.
In 2024, researchers examined data from 24,000 high school students from more than 270 public and private schools.
According to the researchers, the percentage of students abstaining from drug use (including marijuana), alcohol, and smoking in 2024 was 67% in 12th grade (compared to 53% in 2017), 80% in 10th grade (compared to 69% in 2017), and 90% in 8th grade (compared to 87% in 2017).
