The new statement aligns with what Musk mentioned during the previous Tesla earnings report: at that time, he said that the company would "launch uncontrolled self-driving in California and Texas in the second quarter."
Now, the entrepreneur has only mentioned the city of Austin, rather than the entire state of Texas. This could indicate that Tesla will launch an autonomous ride-hailing service with remote control in Austin, similar to what Waymo has been offering in several cities for years.
Meanwhile, Waymo is experiencing growth. Its robotaxi service made driverless rides available to all residents of Los Angeles last November, began operating on highways earlier this week to expand its service area, and plans to launch services in Atlanta and Austin by the end of the year. Additionally, Waymo intends to start test rides in another 10 cities by the end of 2025.
