Elon Musk's call to end the International Space Station (ISS) operations several years earlier than NASA's planned schedule, expressed on social media platform X on February 20, poses an additional challenge to the already strained relationship between Musk and the American space agency.
“It’s time to start preparing for the decommissioning of the ISS. It has fulfilled its purpose. Today, the station provides little benefit. Let’s go to Mars,” — wrote the billionaire.
When asked to clarify whether this means the ISS will be decommissioned before 2030, Musk explained that it should happen within two years.
“The decision is made by the president, but I recommend doing it as soon as possible. I suggest [decommissioning the ISS] in two years,” — stated Musk.
Now, the entrepreneur's influence in the Trump administration and his stance threaten to disrupt NASA's plans for a smooth transition from the ISS to commercial orbital stations.
