However, this ambitious and risky plan may be doomed from the start. At least, that’s the view of biologist and writer Kelly Weinersmith.
In a recent interview with CNN, Kelly and her husband, animator Zach Weinersmith, elaborated on their skepticism regarding the colonization of the Red Planet.
“It is impossible to increase the population of Mars to a million people without a catastrophe occurring,” Weinersmith warned.
According to the biologist, women on the Red Planet are unlikely to be able to carry and give birth to children due to gravity issues (the gravitational force on the surface of Mars is about 2.5 times weaker than that of Earth). Additionally, there is no liquid water, it is extremely cold, and the entire planet is essentially a vast desert.
Nevertheless, Weinersmith noted that in the short term, the Red Planet could be an excellent site for research.
These concerns resonate with those of other experts who have criticized Musk's plans for colonizing Mars. Besides political, technological, and ethical questions, this project could prove excessively expensive even for the richest person in the world.
