Scientists have documented orcas hunting the world's largest fish—the whale shark.
In the southern region of the California Gulf, researchers documented a pod of orcas hunting a whale shark. While orcas frequently prey on sharks, such occurrences are exceedingly rare to witness firsthand.

Of the four documented attacks by orca pods on sharks, recorded between 2018 and 2024, a male named Montezuma was involved in three of them. In the fourth incident, individuals associated with Montezuma were observed.
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest shark and the biggest fish on the planet: it can reach lengths of up to 20 meters and weigh as much as 34 tons, comparable to the size of an average sperm whale.
