On January 16, SpaceX was forced to detonate the upper stage of its Starship during a routine test flight. As a result, some debris from the vehicle reached the Earth's surface, landing on the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Atlantic.
Fortunately, no one was injured. According to the National Security Secretariat of the islands' government, the material damage is minimal.
The FAA reported that the Starship debris fell outside the designated zones. Online, there have also been posts from island residents regarding their discoveries of the wreckage. Among other things, they mentioned the distinctive hexagonal tiles of the spacecraft's thermal protection system.
However, SpaceX disagreed with the Federal Aviation Administration's assessment. The company pointed out that the debris could not have fallen outside the designated zones.
“Starship was operating within the established launch corridor, as are all launches in the U.S., to ensure the safety of people on land, water, and in the air,” states on the mission page.
Determining the full consequences of the test launch is one of the objectives of the forthcoming investigation.
