Axiom Space has announced an updated sequence of modules that it plans to deploy by the end of the decade for the assembly of the Axiom station, starting with the Power Thermal Module (PPTM), which will be the first to dock with the ISS.

Initially, Axiom Space intended to install a habitat module on the ISS by the end of 2026, followed by a second habitat module and a research module. Only then would they dock the power and thermal module with an airlock, allowing them to detach from the ISS around the end of the decade to begin autonomous flight.

However, the company has decided to revise the assembly sequence of the station. It will now begin with the PPTM, followed by the launch of the first habitat module, Hab1. Instead of docking with the ISS, the PPTM will leave it and connect with the habitat module, enabling the creation of a free-flying station with just two modules. This could happen as early as 2028.
