A recent article about our four-legged friends has been published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports by specialists from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest (Hungary). The authors stated that the aim of the study was to provide “a comprehensive review of the pros and cons of dog ownership.”

They recruited 246 volunteers over the age of 18 who had dogs at home through social media. No monetary compensation was offered for participation, but five gift certificates were later raffled among those who completed the survey.

Participants were presented with 33 neutral statements related to pet ownership. For example: “Dogs need to be trained and educated,” “Dogs can bring mess and dirt into the home,” “Dogs can keep children company.”

Each statement was rated on a seven-point scale from -3 to +3, depending on whether the assertion was seen as an advantage or a disadvantage (zero indicated a neutral stance). Additionally, respondents were asked to describe significant positive and negative aspects related to having dogs.

On some survey points regarding the responsibilities and obligations that come with having a pet, opinions varied. In particular, ratings ranged from negative to neutral and positive regarding dog care, the time required for it, the impact of dogs on the owner's daily routine and sleep quality, and potential emotional distress due to the illness or age of the animals.

At the same time, for many points, people expressed nearly unanimous positive or negative views. The survey revealed that the most significant downside for dog owners is their relatively short lifespan. Conversely, the statement “Dogs can make life brighter” received the highest ratings.

Among the key advantages of dogs, many respondents highlighted their sincerity, loyalty, and unconditional love for their owners. The positive influence on lifestyle and physical activity was also frequently mentioned.

Moreover, in detailed responses about the negative aspects of dog ownership, 95% of those surveyed identified financial costs related to pet care and treatment as the most significant drawback.

The results indicate that many aspects associated with having a pet dog can be perceived as both a practical and emotional burden, even by loyal respondents such as dog owners. The findings emphasize the importance of a responsible approach when considering pet ownership and the need to weigh all pros and cons before making a decision.

A previous extensive study in the USA showed that dogs with impeccable behavior are nearly nonexistent and identified common canine misdemeanors. In another article, a group of Finnish veterinarians and psychologists reported that some individuals experienced stress, anxiety, and irritation instead of joy upon bringing a puppy home. Due to its similarity to symptoms of postpartum affective disorder, this condition was dubbed “puppy depression.”
