Researchers from the University of California, Irvine, and the University of Waterloo have discovered that warm tidal currents are accelerating the melting of glaciers in West Antarctica, leading to a faster retreat than predicted by models.
If the situation continues to worsen, warm ocean waters could melt Thwaites and raise sea levels by nearly 3.35 meters. This would put many major coastal cities and small island nations at risk of flooding.
