If the station had not altered its orbital altitude, the fragment of space debris could have passed within four kilometers of it, which is relatively close by cosmic standards.
According to data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States, the potentially hazardous object was part of a defunct weather satellite that disintegrated in 2015.
Such maneuvers are not uncommon for the ISS. As per an analysis conducted by NASA in December 2022, the station has avoided debris 32 times since its launch in 1999.
