In September 2022, the 33-meter prototype of the SpinLaunch system successfully launched a payload into orbit for NASA, Airbus, Cornell University (USA), and the satellite company Outpost for the first time.
The SpinLaunch launch system accelerates rockets to incredible speeds within a vacuum chamber using electric motors. Once the centrifuge reaches the desired speed, a release mechanism launches the rocket, propelling it out of the chamber at approximately 2.2 kilometers per second.
When the launch vehicle reaches suborbital altitude, the engines ignite, and the rocket delivers the payload into orbit.
