Flights of the tiltrotor aircraft have been suspended following an incident involving the CV-22 operated by the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico. During the flight, the CV-22 crew was forced to make an emergency landing due to a "material failure." Fortunately, no one was injured this time; however, over the past two years, there have been four accidents involving V-22 tiltrotors, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 American servicemen.
To date, more than 400 V-22 Ospreys have been produced, the majority of which are in service with the U.S. Marine Corps. Since the first flight of the V-22 in 1989, numerous serious aviation incidents, including fatal ones, have been recorded, which makes the Pentagon's concerns following the latest CV-22 incident quite justified.
