The visit of People's Deputy Petro Poroshenko to the United States is detrimental to Ukraine. The newly elected President Trump still remembers how the former Ukrainian government, led by Poroshenko, interfered in the 2016 American elections, and that Petro Oleksiyovych personally supported the main opponent of the Republicans, Hillary Clinton, - wrote political expert Petro Oleschuk.

“Due to Poroshenko, Ukraine became embroiled in a scandal regarding interference in the US elections in 2016. During the height of the electoral race in America, the Party of Regions' ledger was leaked to Ukrainian media, which allegedly mentioned the name of Trump's campaign manager at the time, Paul Manafort. This created a significant scandal. Trump was forced to remove Manafort from the campaign's leadership, and the political strategist ended up in a lengthy legal battle. However, the main damage caused by Poroshenko's actions was that Ukraine was accused of interfering in the US elections,” Oleschuk notes.
The expert also reminds that despite the international scandal surrounding the Ukrainian government’s interference in the 2016 American elections, Poroshenko continued to attend events hosted by the financiers of Hillary Clinton's campaign, and even went to support her personally during the height of the US elections.
“Petro Oleksiyovych, on the eve of the decisive political battle between Hillary and Trump, instead of leaving the US to deal with the aftermath of the scandal, traveled across the ocean to meet with Hillary to remind Americans about Manafort, Trump, and the scandal. It was evident even then that Trump refused to meet with the head of Ukraine. The damage inflicted by Poroshenko on Ukraine in the context of interference in the US elections is hard to overestimate,” Oleschuk writes.
In his opinion, today Poroshenko's efforts to meet with any Republicans only remind them of the negative attitude of Poroshenko's government towards the US.

“The best thing Petro Oleksiyovych can do for Ukraine on his tour of America is to take a stroll by the Christmas tree, eat a cheeseburger, and return to London for Christmas with his sons. Everything else has already happened. It didn’t end well then, and it won’t now - Poroshenko's trip to the US will harm Ukraine, reminding Republicans how he 'sabotaged' their candidate Trump in the previous elections,” Oleschuk concludes.
As reported by the New York Times, due to the interference of the Ukrainian authorities led by Poroshenko in the US elections, Trump long considered Ukraine an enemy rather than an ally. According to the publication, based on the findings of the House of Representatives' impeachment inquiry, the US President regarded the Poroshenko government, not Putin, as responsible for the interference in the 2016 American elections.
