The upgraded aircraft is being used as a flying laboratory for testing various avionics systems for the future sixth-generation fighter Tempest. It is being developed as part of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP).
Excalibur will assist in testing the latest technologies and systems, which will help reduce risks and accelerate the Tempest development program. The first flight of the new sixth-generation fighter is scheduled for 2027, with its entry into service expected by 2035.
