As orgasm is essential for both physical and psychological well-being, numerous contemporary studies focus on this subject. Authors of recent scientific works have shown that the clitoris not only enables women to experience pleasure but also increases the chances of conception, and have derived a formula for male orgasm.
Researchers from the University of Essex in the UK were among the first to explore healthy female orgasm, defined as one that occurs under normal conditions rather than in the presence of pathologies. They discovered that interoception plays a crucial role in its occurrence—this is the ability of the human body to respond to internal signals and to be aware of what is happening within it. The findings of the study were published in the scientific journal Brain Sciences.
When a person has a low level of interoception, they may not realize they are cold, tired, or hungry until it becomes extreme. A multitude of receptors located in the internal organs typically "report" our state, and we listen to our body's signals, acting to alleviate discomfort and maintain functionality.
The authors of the article measured the level of interoception in 360 women, who also shared their sexual experiences. Those respondents who were more attuned to their internal signals, such as heartbeat, breathing, and responses to sensual touches, experienced orgasms 20% more often than women with lower levels of interoception and felt satisfaction after sexual intercourse with a partner or masturbation 20% more frequently.
“Our study demonstrates that women need to shift their focus from thoughts to their bodies in order to achieve more frequent and satisfying orgasms. <…> A better understanding of how a woman reaches orgasm can enhance her well-being and increase relationship satisfaction for both her and her partner. Therefore, it is important to trust the internal sensations of a woman's body during sexual activities,” the researchers concluded.
