The world's oldest albatross laid an egg at the age of 74.

The oldest known wild bird is a female Laysan albatross named Wisdom, who surprised researchers by laying an egg at the age of 74.

This year, Wisdom returned to the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in the Pacific and laid one egg in December. Now, for the next two months, the future parents will take turns incubating it.

The news surprised ornithologists, as Laysan albatrosses typically live between 12 to 40 years. Wisdom, who has been known to experts since 1956, recently lost her partner.
