China has approved the construction of the world's largest hydropower project.
The Chinese government has approved a project for the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the lower reaches of the longest river in Tibet, the Yarlung Tsangpo. The new hydroelectric facility is expected to generate three times more energy than the largest existing hydropower project, the Three Gorges Dam, which produces approximately 100 billion kilowatt-hours annually.
