A researcher has identified 8,620 sunken ships in Portuguese waters, approximately 250 of which the expert believes were carrying various valuables. His study spans the coastal areas of mainland Portugal and the waters surrounding the Azores and Madeira islands.
One of the vessels may be the Spanish Nossa Senhora do Rosário, which sank in 1589 off the Troia Peninsula. According to the archaeologist, it was transporting 22 tons of gold and silver.
