Scientists, analyzing images of Io's surface captured by the spacecraft's instrument — the Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) — have discovered a previously unknown hot region in the southern hemisphere of Jupiter's moon.
The total area of volcanic activity in this region is 100,000 square kilometers. This is three times larger than the area of Lake Baikal. The total energy output from this area is 80 trillion watts, which is six times more than all the power plants on Earth produce combined.
As of now, this is the most powerful volcanic activity ever recorded in the Solar System.
