Hungarian European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, who was offered the portfolio of Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare in the new European Commission, did not receive swift approval in the European Parliament.
He will undergo an additional review in the form of questions from the deputies.

On November 6, Varhei was questioned by the committees of the European Parliament. He spent about 3.5 hours responding to inquiries regarding his new area of responsibility and his connections with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
As a result, the coordinators of the relevant committees decided to request another round of written questions from Varhei.
"We note that the answers provided by Mr. Varhei do not meet the expectations of the Renew Europe group, so we conclude that at this stage we cannot support his nomination," said the liberal group after the hearings with the Hungarian candidate.
The coordinator of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety from the Greens, Sara Matthieu, pointed out that Varhei did not convince them of his suitability for the position.
Among other things, Varhei faced many questions regarding his stance on abortion, and he reiterated that he is an ally of women, but claimed that this issue is outside the EU's competencies.
According to several European Parliament officials, whose names have not been disclosed by the publication, Varhei was supported only by the "European Conservatives and Reformists," while the Greens, liberals, and social democrats insisted on another round of written questions.
Varhei will have to respond to them by Monday, after which the committee coordinators will hold another meeting regarding his candidacy, where a two-thirds majority is required for approval. If they still fail to reach a decision on approval or rejection, the vote will move to the level of the committees as a whole, where a simple majority will be sufficient for approval.
The developments regarding Varhei's candidacy did not come as a surprise. He is the first candidate to encounter issues during the appointment process for the new European Commission. Recall that in the new Commission, Varhei was nominated for the position of Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, having previously dealt with the important area of enlargement.
It is worth noting that EU ambassadors have extended the mandate of the EU military training mission for two years, which provides training for Ukrainian soldiers.
