In Ukraine, the project "Barrier-Free Movement" has been launched. It aims to create accessible routes for people with disabilities and those with reduced mobility. This was reported by the Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine, Oleksii Kuleba, as conveyed by "Vidomo".
"In the pilot cities of Ukraine, we are starting the development and implementation of barrier-free routes together with local authorities. This is a specific transport and pedestrian path organized by the community to be as accessible as possible for people with disabilities and those with reduced mobility," – the minister explained.
According to him, all locations along this route will be made accessible, including intersections, crossings, schools, kindergartens, cafes, public transport, etc. There will be navigation signs, tactile markings, and other solutions to ensure not only comfort but also safety for individuals, the official added.
"Communities will independently choose and propose the routes that will become barrier-free as part of the project. However, it is important that they include as many socially significant facilities as possible, featuring and combining important locations within the urban environment. For example, a military hospital in Kyiv – a key facility for the capital, or, for instance, in the city of Dnipro – Mechnikov Hospital," – emphasized Kuleba.
This year, barrier-free routes with convenient approaches, transport, stops, sidewalks, and public places will gradually appear in 12 cities: Dnipro, as well as in Kyiv, Odesa, Zhytomyr, Kropyvnytskyi, Lviv, Rivne, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Slavutych, Ternopil, Bucha, and the village of Opishnia.
According to the Ministry of Development's plans, the experience of the pilot communities will be scaled to other settlements that will be included in the project.
