In Dnipro, a restored memorial plaque honoring Vyacheslav Chornovil, an outstanding Ukrainian political figure and advocate for Ukraine's independence, was ceremonially unveiled, reports a correspondent from "Vidomo".

The event took place on the boulevard named after him. The previous memorial plaque, which was installed in the early 2000s, was vandalized twice, the latest incident occurring in December 2024. Activists discovered the damage and decided to restore the memorial themselves. Thanks to the support of concerned citizens, the new plaque was completed in early January 2025. The opening ceremony was attended by local government representatives, public figures, and Father Dmytro Povorotny, who led a prayer for the repose of Vyacheslav Chornovil's soul.

"This is not just the unveiling of a memorial plaque. It is an act of respect for a great Ukrainian, who, unfortunately, is not universally accepted due to his symbolic significance for Ukraine's independence. The vandalism that the plaque endured is likely the work of those nostalgic for the Russian world. However, thanks to the Ukrainian community and the support of city officials, we have restored this memorial with the help of compassionate individuals," noted Dnipro's Deputy Mayor Andriy Denysenko.

The new design of the plaque differs from the previous one. It now features an image of Vyacheslav Chornovil's portrait.

"The previous version of the plaque did not include a portrait. We decided to change the design to honor Chornovil's image more appropriately. Through our combined efforts, we raised the funds and fulfilled the promise made at the event on December 24 of last year," the activists remarked.

"On this day, we remember those who have fought for Ukraine for many years. Unfortunately, the situation is repeating itself, just as it did many years ago with Vyacheslav Chornovil. We have gathered to honor him and those Ukrainians who fought for our state. Currently, we face a similar issue: many Ukrainians are imprisoned based on baseless accusations and are becoming victims of torture. We must draw public attention to this problem, as the issue of captives and political prisoners has once again become our reality," stated Kristina Holovacheva, a representative of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.

"Vyacheslav Chornovil is a person who, had he been elected president of Ukraine in 1991, might have prevented a full-scale war. Perhaps we would have already become part of the European world by then. He did not choose the path of armed struggle or violence but relied on the power of words — through speeches and protests, Chornovil was a true people's example, uniting people from the East and West. He said, 'We have no Bandera supporters; we are all one Ukrainian nation, whether from the east or the west.' These words are extremely relevant today. However, we should be united not only by the Ukrainian army and language but also by a sense of Ukrainian identity," shared historian Nazar Karimov from the History Department of DNU.
